Chapter One

The History of Boxing

Boxing is one of the oldest recorded sports on Earth, with evidence of fist-fighting contests stretching back to ancient Egypt, Sumer, and Greece, where it appeared as an Olympic event in 688 BC. The modern sport took shape in 18th-century England under the bare-knuckle rules of the London Prize Ring, and was transformed again in 1867 with the introduction of the Marquess of Queensberry Rules — the foundation for gloved boxing as it is fought today: timed rounds, weight classes, and a scoring system built on skill rather than survival.

Through the 20th century, boxing became a global stage for legends — from the heavyweight dominance of the early gloved era, through the golden age of Ali, Frazier, and Foreman, to the pound-for-pound greats of the modern era. Today the sport spans dozens of weight divisions, sanctioning bodies, and continents, uniting fans from Las Vegas to Dubai around the same ring, the same twelve rounds, and the same pursuit of a championship title.

Training & Technique

Professional guidance for the beginning boxer — the fundamentals every champion masters first, plus a library of drills to sharpen every session.

Beginner Fundamentals

Week 1

Master Your Stance

Everything starts here. Lead foot forward, rear heel slightly raised, weight balanced 50/50, hands up, chin down. Your stance should let you punch, move, and defend without resetting.

  • — Feet shoulder-width apart, lead foot pointing at your target
  • — Keep knees soft — never lock them out
  • — Hands high: lead hand at cheek level, rear at your chin
Weeks 1–2

The Jab Is Everything

The jab is your range-finder, your defense, and your highest-volume punch. Every champion from Ali to Usyk built everything off it. Throw 100 jabs a day before anything else.

  • — Rotate the fist as it extends, snap it back faster than it went out
  • — Never drop your rear hand while jabbing
  • — Step in with the jab to close distance safely
Weeks 2–4

Footwork Before Power

Fights are won with the feet. Learn to step-drag forward, pivot out of corners, and circle away from an opponent's power hand before you ever worry about knockout punching.

  • — Never cross your feet
  • — Move the foot nearest the direction you're going first
  • — Shadowbox 3 rounds focusing only on movement
Weeks 3–6

Defense Wins Rounds

You cannot trade your way to the top. Learn slipping, parrying, blocking, and distance management. The goal is to make opponents miss while staying in position to counter.

  • — Slip small — inches, not feet
  • — Keep your eyes open and on the opponent's chest
  • — Use your legs to get out of range, not just your guard
Ongoing

Condition Like a Fighter

Boxing is the hardest sport to be tired in. Build your engine with jump rope, roadwork, and interval bag work — three minutes hard, one minute rest, exactly like rounds.

  • — Jump rope 3x3-minute rounds daily
  • — Run 2–3 miles of roadwork, 3x per week
  • — Train in round simulations, not marathon sets
Month 2+

Spar Smart, Spar Safe

Sparring is where you learn — but it's practice, not war. Start with light technical sparring, always wear headgear and a mouthguard, and communicate with your partner.

  • — Never spar without proper protection
  • — Leave your ego at the door — 60% effort
  • — Review what happened after every sparring round
